1978 Princess Series One 2200 HLS Automatic

This is a 1978 top of the range Princess 2200 HLS which is in original condition, its paintwork still as shiny as the day it left the factory!

This car is one of the last Princess Series One models, with the flagship HLS specification. It is finished in Vermilion Red coachwork, with the full vinyl roof, standard to the HLS cars. The car is fitted with the ultra smooth six cylinder E series power unit. Power is delivered to the wheels via the Borg Warner 35 automatic gearbox.

The interior is the luxury HLS trim, which includes plush velour seats, a quality radio (MW/LW), wooden dashboard trim, deep pile carpets, colour keyed dashboard assembly, rear cigar lighter and is fitted with the optional front headrests. The instrumentation is comprehensive with a large, convenient clock, battery, fuel and temperature gauges, seatbelt warning lamp in addition to the speedometer.

The HLS Princess features other nice touches such as the fully carpeted boot, convenient underbonnet lamp, chrome wheel trims and chrome bumpers with rubber protective strip. The Princess was always famous for its legroom and this car illustrates it perfectly; masses of room in the front and back, even with the front seats fully slid backwards.

As can be seen from the front of this Princess, it is distinguished as a six cylinder HLS model with its unique "trapezoidal" headlamps and bright grille. The nice "Princess" badges on the grille and rear pillars, as well as the solid "badge bar" on the boot lid, show that this car is a Series One model.

Looking under the bonnet, there is the 2,227cc E series stright six cylinder engine. This is teamed with a pair of twin HIF 6 SU carburettors, allowing smooth, quiet and speedy acceleration. The automatic gearbox allows easy town driving and gives enjoyable motoring at all times.

This car is only used in the summer months and is often seen on the show circuit. The pictures above were taken at the Bexley and Bromley Pageant of Motoring as well as the Peterborough BL/BMC Rally in 2000. The Princess is not only used for going to events; on the nicest of days in the summer months, the car provides a wonderful way to go into the countryside and soak up some wonderful feelings of years gone by.

Series One Princesses are getting fewer and fewer. By keeping this car in as near to "as new" condition as is humanly possible, the heritage of these fantastic vehicles will be saved for future generations to see.
